Introducing our maker series, where we spend time with local artists and creatives exploring their craft, creative practice and highlighting localised communities.

We visited Lex Williams, a furniture maker and timber sculptor from Northern NSW, who discussed his creative journey and offered valuable insights into his industry.

What do you do, and how did you get  to where you are?

I am a furniture maker and timber sculptor. After working as a graphic designer, I studied furniture design in Melbourne. I have been working from my studio in Byron Bay on Bundjalung Country for about six years, sculpting functional objects from timber.

What is your creative process?

My creative process begins with an initial impulse related to a sense of space, which I then translate into a functional object. The process is intuitive, and I embrace a certain freedom in completing a piece, which is somewhat different from conventional furniture making.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from the feeling of shapes I conjure up in unexpected moments or simply from the materiality of timber.

What do you love about where you live? Is  there a local creative community?

I grew up in the Byron Shire, and after living away for most of my adult life, I love being back here. I live a quiet but fulfilling life with my partner in our flat next to Arakwal National Park and the beautiful stretch of beach from Tallows to Broken Head. Yes, there is an incredible creative community here. I have deep respect for the artists and creatives practicing in the region, and I am lucky to call many of them lifelong friends.

How does sustainability impact your impact your work?

I create my work with the notion of making pieces that last for generations. I work with timber from a reforestation project in the Northern Rivers and ensure that all offcuts are used to minimise waste.

What do you want to see change in your industry?

I would like to see more sustainable reforestation projects endemic to each area for timber production.
