This summer sees the launch of two limited edition products featuring a hand-stamped wave design created by photographer and visual artist Ming Nomchong in collaboration with Assembly Label.

Tell us about your print process. What is your main inspiration?

My print process is really drawn back to making a tangible thing. So much of my work and even my life these days is online, so the urge to create something with my hands that ends up back in my hands is a real drive for me. I can’t paint, but I can carve and I started using block printing to create one off pieces that might otherwise just be carbon copies of each other so to speak. I love being able to create a block and then use it repeatedly or singularly to create something new every time you block it. My main inspiration if you couldn’t guess it already is that big expansive blue thing that covers over 70% of the world's surface and that makes up about 70% of us as human beings. My works talk about the inherent relationship we have with the ocean and our connection between our form and its flow.

How does your photography inform your printmaking and vice versa?

My personal photography work usually has an element of water involved and I like to join the two together to create one off pieces with collage and the stamping. Sometimes I will shoot with an idea in mind for a synergy of block printing and image and sometimes I will create a block for an image I’ve already taken. Or I’ll use a shape and repeat it on paper as its own stand alone block print. The possibilities are endless! It’s just about making the time to create in between all the other busy bits of life…
